BCGEU members care about the impacts of poverty on their families, their clients and their communities.
Did you know that BC is the only province without a poverty reduction plan? The BCGEU is a proud member of the Poverty Reduction Coalition, who work to education British Columbians about the cost of poverty and why BC needs a poverty reduction plan. They also have an election-focussed campaign called "Make Poverty Public". The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives also produced a very thorough report earlier this year, "Long Overdue: Why BC Needs a Poverty Reduction Plan".
UPDATE: The Poverty Reduction Coalition have released their report on the platforms and survey responses of the three major parties.
One in five BC children live in poverty, according to the 2016 BC Child Poverty Report Card produced by First Call, the BC Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition. They have produced a comprehensive Election Toolkit which is available online, as well as sharing stories of children and families living in poverty.
While not directly election-focussed, the Vancouver Sun recently published a series of articles about the affordability crisis in the Lower Mainland that is full of information.
